Hello and welcome Fort Weyr. No, this isn’t the old Fort you might have known at one point, with its extensive fighting force. We’ve only recently come to this time period, and we’ve only got a grand total of twelve dragons with us. But there’s a new hope dawning. Our Queen has just laid a clutch of eighteen eggs, including two golden eggs. Two! That could mean so much for Pern and its survivors.
Perhaps it might be useful to tell you the story. You see, about two thousand years ago, Thread disappeared. Over time, the dragons that once protected Pern also disappeared. No one knew where they had gone, or if they were even alive. Quite frankly, hardly anyone cared. No dragons meant that there were no tithes required from Lord Holders, which meant that they were able to become greedier and greedier.
Thread was gone, forever, and there were no worries. People were beginning to forget a need for the solid stone Holds. But you can’t blame them. Who would remember a silvery menace over two thousand years old? It hasn’t fallen, and many believed that it would never fall again.
However, disaster struck. With Earthquakes and volcanoes erupting, and the land becoming colder, no one really took notice of the bright red star in the sky. Why would they? They had more important things to worry about. They needed to find a way to survive with a lack of crops, and they needed to find new shelter.
If they had took notice of the Red Star, then maybe they might have been more prepared for when the sky turned grey. On that day, silver Thread rained down, claiming many lives. People didn’t remember Thread, something that ultimately cost them their lives.
When the people thought that they were doomed, something appeared above Fort Hold. The people in the Hold rushed to the once-abandoned Weyr, hoping that their eyes hadn’t played tricks on them.
At the Weyr, they spotted a small Wing of Dragons. Two Bronzes, three Browns, three Blues, and three Greens. But their riders weren’t around to greet the people. Instead, they were over by the Hatching Sands, where a Queen was busy laying a clutch… Pern’s first clutch in many turns.
Will this be the end of the calamity? Will these Dragons be able to save Pern? Only time will tell. For now, the fate of Pern is in their hands.
