Sorrowful Feast

”Oh yes he grow up with them, G’ree was my fosterling” Morga said scrubbing G’rees hair he was like another son to her.

“Mind boys are just as bad for tail telling” She said looking at G’ree
“And i only ever stopped them doing things that could get them hurt” Morga added

She then turned to T’ibbar “So why does your bother not want a hair cut or is he just at that age where he like looking like a canine?” Morga asked knowing with a son of her own how it went

Talia laughed “Talex has been going through that faze for…first shell i don’t know how many turns” she said

“He likes his hair long and my mother cuts it to short and he likes to hid his scare” T’ibbar said knowing his brother could be a pain, but he was his brother.
“I’ll cut it when i get back or tomorrow if my mother has not done it today”

”That’s odd boys normally like showing off scars” Rio said trying to think she had not ever noticed Talex had a scar

”That’s not always true” G’ree said he had some scar’s he did not let people see.

M’ess stuck his head round the door into the dinner hall, he had his good gather cloths on, something his parents had insisted he bring with him.
He looked round for his family.

L’card followed M’ess into the dinner hall he had on a loose shirt to go over his bandages.
M’ess had kindly said that he could join him at the feast with his family, since he was sure none of his own family had turned up.

He looked at M’ess as he stopped at the door “See your family?” He asked

”I’ll agree to that... i didn’t show my parent half the scars i got” K’inzar said

“And any way my parents like G’ree here better than me they think him interesting” K’inzar said patting G’ree on the shoulder

”I will agree with G’ree on this.” Talia said eating a bit of her meal she was happy the mood was lifting some what

“Oh Talex’s is just fussing, he got the scare off a fire lizard queen when he fell into her nest. He is just being stubborn” T’ibbar said dismissing his brother having any real reason for the dislike of a hair cut “Most likely has a link to his fear of fire lizards to”

”He’s what?” Morga asked not sure she heard right

”Scared of Fire lizards” Talia said trying to hold in a laugh.

”That’s silly, i mean he lives in a weyr, there has to be hundreds of the things flitting around one weyr” Morga said finding the idea silly, holders scared of them yes but a child from the weyr was silly

“That’s what we tell him” T’ibbar said looking at Talia
“Does not help how ever people setting theirs on him”

”He shouldn’t get under my feet or your mothers, and your mother sets hers on him as well” Talia added

“yeah but that’s my mum… its her job to terrorise her son’s” T’ibbar said sticking up for his brother

Rio laughed “Oh by the first shell, no wonder he left the room when i came in with Nip”

”Your parents only think me interesting, because i go see them a bit more than you do, only holders i think really do like, next to your parents” He said to Talia and E’lric


M’ess looked round, like he thought his parents were not hard to spot “Yeah come on” he said leading the way to them.

“Mother, father,” He said giving a bow his father getting up giving his son a hug.

his little brother got up hugging his big brother, putting crumbs on his brother cloths “Who, this?” he said pointing to L’card

“Ah this is L’card, his parents couldn’t make it and i didn’t think it wise to let him wonder round the feast on his won” M’ess said indicating for L’card to come closer.

”Good idea Max…oh em…what did you changing your name to…come sit down L’card was it” M’ess mother said indicating to the seats at the table

M’ess laughed a bit…it would take time for them to remember his new rider name.
“M’ess, mum” this set his brother off laughing

”Messy” he said clapping his hands

“I hope you are keeping your room not messy” M’ess said to his brother.

”Keep things tidy or not see Max, keep things tidy or not see Max”

“Good” M’ess said petting his brother on the back and looking at his parents M’ess had done a lot to help them with his little brother and he wondered how hard they may find it with out him around

“Oh don’t let it worry you Rio, its just something Talex will just have to deal with” T’ibbar said and he could say it because it was his brother.
”Parents always find other people kids interesting that’s why we have a fosterlings” E’lric said pointing out this fact

”Ah but i bet you two were not fostered out, with you being a Lord and Lady Holders son and daughter” Morga said knowing a good few were keeping there own blood close to home

”Oh me, Talia and out older brother Sarahdrin were all fostered out to other holds.
Sarahdrin to K’ttak East Cliff weyrling masters fathers hold, Talia went to Benden and i went to Ruatha” E’lric said realising he was the only one to be sent half a world away until Nila to the Harper hall

”Well nearly all of use Nila our little sister never was fostered out, but she is at the Harper Hall now learning” Talia said, her little sister was a bit of a pain, as she hated E’lric and Talia actually idolised her big brother.

”By the fist shell four and two dragon riders, your parents must be very proud” Morga said knowing she was of her own two and her daughter who was a Harper, next time she wrote her daughter she would asked about Nila

“Yes but still it does may me seam a bit insensitive, to the problem” Rio said

“Sometimes being insensitive can actually help solve the problem quicker if your deny something attention quickly people will stop creating the problem…that is how you handle Elday, she thrives on attention if she starts any of her tricks just ground her dragon, Elday may not do as you tell her but by an unwritten rule among the dragon Vieth has to obey Aerith” G’ree said pointing this out to the young girl.

L’card followed M‘ess, he hung back when M’ess greeted his family, he saw M’ess’s brother hug him then look at him and ask who he was.
L’card studied the younger brother of M’ess he looked like a normal boy except the way he talked and the way he shook his hands every now and then.

“Thank you” He said joining the Smith at their table
He listened and heard how M’ess talked to his brother in a very understanding tone but with enough force to say that they little brother know to do what his older brother said.

”I wasn’t fostered out, but i lived in the hall so spent time in the apprentice dorms” K’inzar said hearing about the others

”Oh yes our parents are very proud of use, well they are of Talia” E’lric said he had got racked over the coals for hitting H’ton and losing he wingleader knots. But he had them back now and that was what counted

Talia hit E’lric “Stop that, they are impressed with you, just whish you would think sometime before you act and they are singing your praises very highly this last seven day over rescuing Tifa.” Talia said she should have brought the girl with her thinking of her in the barracks not knowing many people made her feel bad

”hmm…how is she ?” E’lric asked about Tifa he had not had a chance to ask till now

”Ok …still worried…oh when she has a dragon of her own she may stop worrying the watch wher’s are going to come after her and take her back…like that is ever going to happen to her” Talia said watch wher’s were to sharding scared of dragon to come close enough and none of their handlers would have the guts to try entering a weyr and if they did then they would be asking for trouble.

”Oh what happened with a girl and Watch Wher’s?” Morga asked “You have to understand we don’t get much news in this weyr” Morag said

So Talia and E’lric told the tail of what had happened with Tifa how E’lric had found her took her to his parents hold then the the Wher hold then gone back to check on her and found her so worried and up set he had took her away back to his parents hold where Tifa had made her self ill with worry, then got in contact with Talia and how Tifa was now at the weyr

”Oh the poor little hatchling, i would have set the wher handles knees a shaken if i had been there” Morag said hearing the tail

“Nothing insensitive about it Rio, firelizards are a fact of life in the weyr and G’ree is right…if it was something like tunnel Snakes then i would understand i have seen people get nasty bights off those things” Tibbar said he half listened to the account of how East Cliff had Tifa as a guest and then laughed as he heard Morga echo his mothers words.
“My mother is in the exact same mind, she was ready to ride her green out and have the watch wher’s and their handlers cringing in their dens” T’ibbar said

”Sounds like a good women your mother” Morga said to T’ibbar

“ That she is” T’ibbar said raising his glass to Morga for her compliment on his mother

Rio looked down at her plate when G’ree mentioned Elday.
“Yes but i do not want to set a weyr against me for seaming to be having a go at one of their own” Rio said still feeling the outsider

G’ree shook his head “No you wont the Weyr knows Elday and her tricks and you had R’reeks wing men jumping to your aid that flight drill, stand your ground with her and you will find a good few will back you up” G’ree said feeling Rio needed the reassurance over this old matter.

Rio nodded her head and then turned to look as Talia and E’lric talked about a girls candidate

“Why ever did the girl not go to East Cliff in the fist place, a girl who is willing to walk across Pern deserves a place in the weyr” Rio said also shocked at the way the girl had been treated

”So where are you from L’card?" M’ess’s father asked he had a deep sounding voive

M’ess gave L’card a side glance he ate and getting his brother to eat fist then they would talk.
He wondered what L’card would say and he hoped his parents would not judge before they got to know L’card

L’card looked a bit unsure about what to say to M’ess’s family but if he didn’t say something they may think he was embarrassed to say where he was form, which in a way he was, as Bitra were not that known for their honesty and really L’card had followed that but, his more for self preservation than anything else and to try and better his life.
“Em i am from Bitra” He said not sure what to say next to add to that.

K’inzar listened in a way he felt it was lucky the girl had not been found to soon or she could have ended up at this hatching

Talia made a bit of a face at Rio’s question, then realised Rio may not know about E’lrics restriction of being in East Cliff

”Because i am not allowed in East Cliff when H’ton is there, he banished me form ever setting foot there while he is there or as weyrleader…and at the time i could not contact the Weyr as H’ton decided to remain home for a few days and then i was needed at my own weyr and i needed to get the matter cleared up quick before H’ton found out…
I would have took her back to my serving weyr but it would have raised a good few questions” E’lric said pointing out these things to Rio and bringing her up to date on things

”Ah…that’s what happens when your bad, then again if it were my sister i would have done the same, but count your self lucky you never got sent here” K’inzar said taking a drink from his cup.
“Though he might be a good guest speaker for the weyrlings…to show them what can happen and how it can have consequences” K’inzar said trying to give his friend as much help as he could on this matter.

”Oh i count my self very lucky, that this place” E’lic pointed his finger to the roof “was not even thought of when i hit H’ton…”

”Pardon me dear brother, but you did more than hit H’ton” Talia said to her brother, just hitting H’ton was a great understatement as E’lic had knocked and kicked the living daylights out of H’ton

”Ok, i kicked and knocked the living daylights out of the dead glow and even faced with this place, i would do the same thing to protect my sister” E’lric said to Talia grinning proudly

”Ssss…Sisters…would you do the same for Nila?” Talia asked knowing that their little sister was a bit of a brat

”Emm…depends i think…do i have to be sober doing that…Ouch” E’lric said as he got not only a clout off Talia but one off Morga and T’ibbar.
“I am joking Nila may be a pain in the rear and more annoying than threads, but blood is thicker than water and the only one who gets to pick on her is me, you and Sarahdrin…what’s he up to by the way i forgot to ask you and our parents, he was not in the hold much when i went?” E’lric asked of his old brother as Talia saw more of him than he…

”Oh…he is busy building some shelters along the roads for thread fall, he wants to expand the flock numbers and needs some where to store them during fall and also plant some more fields for fodder” Talia said knowing she had not told H’ton what Sarahdrin was doing as he would not like the holds expanding with out telling him.

“Well even i know that, was riding search with K’ttak and he insisted to go talk to Sarahdrin about something, i wonder what” T’ibbar said he know what K’ttak had been telling his best and closest friend.

”Don’t play deceptive T’ibbar it does not suit you…most likely telling Sarahdrin that he is going to be a father and asking Sarahdrin to be the child’s godfather” Talia said scolding T’ibbar

“Ok…” T’ibbar laughed holding up his hands in submission.

“Oh i didn’t know” Rio said after she had heard the story about what had happened for E’lirc not to be allowed to be in the weyr.

She slightly admired E’lrics loyalty to his sister and the extent he was willing to go to look after them. She only wished her brothers were like that

G’ree listened as he picked at his food E’lic was very lucky to have missed a stay here.
When the subject turn to sister G’ree took a bit of a solum look as he reflected on his life and what he tried to do for his own sister and how he had let her down. If only he had been a dragon rider sooner he could have swept down and brought her here to safety

Rio notice G’ree’s dark thoughtful look, he looked a bit upset “Are you alright?” She asked in a whisper

Rio pulled G’ree from his brooding on the past “Oh…em yes just thinking that’s all” G’ree said shaking off the mood he had slipped into

M’ess father nodded “know a good few smiths up that way, so what did you do at the hold?” M’ess’s father asked not wanting to pry to much though he hoped his son would be watching this lad in his dealings

M’ess looked at his father he was not sure how to read his reaction to L’card saying where he was from. M’ess know very well the Master Smith never sent his best or good smith to Bitra Hold as he always had better places to send them, so he only sent adequate ones and ones who know not to get into any card games and could handle them selves in any situation.

K’inzar laughed a bit as E’lric was hit by his sister, T’ibbar and Morga. He himself had been on the receiving end of one of her clouts a few times.

He looked over at G’ree seeing the man look very down and gloomy.
Shards he whished he could get into peoples head sometimes and know what was going on especially with people like Zaira if he could just find out what her little tick was with him he could sort it out and G’ree…well he know there were things G’ree didn’t say about himself, he never mentioned his family and when you had a conversation about family’s he got this misty look like something inside hurt and his problem with Holders, there was more to it than the fact that G’ree didn’t like them worshiping him and the dragon he rides and the fact that G’ree got on alright with K’inzars parents, all that was different was his parent’s were healer.
Things could be so complicated at times

L’card picked up on the note of distrust and he had expected it, but he saw the look M’ess gave his father…L’card did not get it, it was like M’ess did not like to judge before he got to know people, that might be true or M’ess could just be a kind person, looking at the way he talked to his brother that might be true and M’ess may genuinely want to be his friend, but with growing up among people who would only want to befriend you to get something form you was a hard thing to just ignore and forget. It was what had kept him on top growing up how he had got into his grandfathers inner circle and now here. L’card had never intended to be in the weyr, being a dragon rider had never crossed his mind; really L’card had wanted to run and win enough money to pay for a claim in the south.

“Em…i was the holds message runner” L’card said when M’ess’s father asked what he had done, no need to say who his parents were, as much as anyone could know they were holders and no one need know one of them was a illegitimate child to the Lord Holder

”Hey its ok, i am quite pleased that it is something people at East Cliff don’t talk about anymore. Its been a few turns since it happened, but it is finally starting to calm down and be forgotten” E’lric said not sure if H’ton would forgive or forget as E’lric know he himself could not forgive H’ton for hitting Talia

”Yes but i think it will take sometime before H’ton forgets, if he ever does” Talia said knowing that it was a matter that really had gone on for a long time, but fights did not happen that often in a weyr so that might be why it hung round that much.
B’hamuets fight with Rio’s brother may have lessened the thought on E’lric beating H’ton, but Talia would not bring that up, not with Rio sitting near her and the fact that Rio was already been in trouble over that matter enough for this turn

“So you were never meant to be in the weyr all those time’s i say you…Oh shards it is a good job i never talk to H’ton unless it was in a passing greeting” Rio said turning back to Talia and E’lric but still she was worried about G’ree his mood seamed to have darkened a bit like something had upset.

M’ess looked at L’card say he was a runner, well he was long and lean enough for it.

”Oh a message runner, now that’s a job to keep you fit” M’ess’s mother said trying not to sound to judging like her husband

“i run fast, get to take messages from one building to the other” M’ess brother said putting in his bit.

“Oh yeah, he run’s to” M’ess said to L’card it was job M’ess had found his brother was good at to take a message to one Smith building to the other.

“But you don’t go out side the Hall you’ll get lost” M’ess said

M’ess brother blew a raspberry at him, “Wont get lost, know my way home. But i good stay in the hall where i work” M’ess brother said nodding his head

”Boy don’t fight…and he is being a good lad, taking messages” M’ess father said

“Yes very, i was the fastest in the Hold, i had planned to try and win enough money to by a plot in the South or West where some Holders were renting out land…Bitra is far to cold for my liking in the winter, mind with being searched here i have ended up somewhere colder” L’card said he turned as M’ess said what his brother did.
Now he could see M’ess brother as a runner, when M’ess brother stood he may be as tall as himself and as long in the leg, but there was more to running than being fast you had to have timing, stamina and be able to control your breathing if you wanted to last a long race.

”See always said i am not the only one who turns up where i am not meant to be, but we turn up when needed” K’inzar said knowing he had shown up in a few times when he could help out a situation, shame today had not been one of them.

“I will vouch for you turning up places you’re not meant to be…isn’t that half the places you go?” G’ree asked he know K’inzar was one of the few riders that hat the privilege to leave Top Point when they chose and really K’inzar was not posted to Top Point but he did a job for F’hursna so that was why he came here so often, i could not be for the weather

Rio looked at K’inzar “What so you can leave when ever you like and not come back…you can be asked to beposted to another weyr a warmer one?” Rio asked

“K’inzar was never a inmate at Top Point…how is just luck on his half…he has leave to come and go when he chose’s…and a few of use who have been sent here do have the privilege to leave the weyr when with a rider who can come and go as they choose or then we’re allowed to fight threads” G’ree said to Rio explaining the situation to her

”Oh” Rio said then looked at G’ree he said, a few of use…so he was sent here…oh she wondered what G’ree could have done to end up here he seamed very nice and kind.

”Oh you did have ambitions lad…and plans for better weather is always good…Mind who know you could get posted South with your dragon” M’ess dad said realising that maybe L’card may just be a hold workers son who just wanted a better life and thought to use his talent to do so…but then again Bitra’s played many games to catch people off guard

”So what colour dragon did you impress, i was a bit to worried to watch much of it” M’ess mother said her husband had told her when M’ess had impressed
