When AVIAS was discovered, many believed Pern was saved. That Thread would never fall again, and that the world was safe. And as Turns passed, the Holds withdrew their support for the Weyrs and the number of dragons dwindled down into small numbers, barely clinging onto existence. After all, there was no longer a need for the protectors of Pern.
Pern, though a plentiful planet with everything humans needed to survive off, proved to be lacking in some resources that the new technology required. For a while, the new machines worked, but slowly, Pern ran out of the resources. Without the fuel to dig for more of the supply, the machines - like many things impractical before - were put aside. Taken between and dropped into nothingness. Pern and the Pernese returned to the life that had worked for so many centuries.
'Look mommy, there's a third moon!'
A more recent development started though about ten Turns back from now. A third moon appeared in the sky, glowing as bright a red as the once Red Star. This was seen as a bad omen and many turned wary of the new moon that circled Pern, not only at night, but in the day, sharing Rukbat's light. Finally, the new moon was seen for what it really was; a large portion of the Red Star that had been blown from the other planet a good two hundred turns back when AVIAS had gotten rid of Thread. The gravitational pull of Pern had pulled this smaller chunk into it's orbit, just as it had done it's sister planet. Thread fell again, and once more, the planet turned to the small number of dragon riders left on the planet. Once more, dragonriders needed to fly. The Thread fell more often, the smaller 'moon' able to gravitate faster and closer to the planet, though the quantity was smaller.
'Hey Cagronth, you alright there?'
Yet with only one Weyr left and such a small number of dragons, Thread was hard to fight and no dragon is able to be everywhere at all times. Pern needed it's protectors once more, and unfortunately, they just weren't breeding fast enough, not with only one Gold left, still young yet. The previous Queen barely managed it, seeming to clutch out of desperation as if her body knew of the danger in the skies. Still, the clutches were small, and without enough candidates, many betweened without a bonded.
Still, there is one hope, and that would be the last clutch that the old Queen, now decased, left in the care of the young Queen and the golden egg that rests amongst them.
'I still think it's a bad omen. This entire thing is a bad omen.'
And so, welcome to the tenth turn of Era of Change.
